NORTHERN FELLS Progress Report ~ 2 of 24
This post differs from the others, with their pretty one-off picture and some random rambling about whatever comes to mind.
Here, I’m explicitly showing you where I’m at, Wainwrightwise, and indulging in some hard-core monologues about what the hell I’m trying to do, hillwise, and sometimes rather unwise too, we’ll see.
It’s fun, because as you can see I’m right at the start of my adventure. I’ve only done two Wainwrights and they’re both in his Northern Fells, right next to my home base, Keswick. Click to enlarge this map.
My cunning plan is that in talking about potential routes and updating the maps and suchlike here, I’ll actually get to know some of the fells and routes I’m considering in a way I couldn’t be bothered to do otherwise.
I’m not going to drag it out; there are a million blogs giving detailed options and itineraries and pee-stops and butt-scratching posts and the like. This is gonna be broad brush blethering.
For example, I see there’s a nice little cluster of fells to the northwest of Latrigg* (which I’ve *done!) and nor’-nor’-west of Keswick. These include Skiddaw, of course, but also one called Long Side, I think, which looks great and a bit hairy-scary to these amateur eyes.
Then there are a handful behind Blencathra* (*done) and not too far, which would be cool to put on the map, tick off the list and *asterisk too. That’ll probably do it for the Northern Fells for my next trip.
I’m also eyeing the Coledale Horseshoe and Catbells and beyond in the North Eastern Fells and Walla Crag and Bleaberry Fell in the Central Fells, all accessible from Keswick.
Lastly, I do fancy a venture further afield, especially to the very first proper walk I did, which knocked me out – the superb Fairfield Horseshoe in the Eastern Fells. When I got to the top and looked down on Saint Sunday Crag, all those years ago, I just thought, “Wow!” I’d love to “Wow!” again one day!
If anyone wants to join me for any of these, at the end of October and beginning of November 2022 from Keswick, just let me know!
